April 9 2013 – What do you get when you combine a caring dance counsellor, nine young detention centre escapees equipped with contortion abilities and Michael Jackson dance moves, a strident warden in hot pursuit of justice and a society that views them as throwaways ?
You get the rousing new dance film, Aayna Ka Bayna (Victory Shall Be Ours).
Aayna Ka Bayna is part daytime soap opera, part Breakfast Club redux, all set to a dance competition vibe. With the opening caption stating, 'We love you Michael Jackson', it’s a safe bet there is going to be street beats and dance, dance, dance on the menu. From the torturous confines of Yashwant Juvenile Detention Home and under the heavy handed cane of Warden Harshvardhan Sathe ( Sachin Khedekar) a group of adolescent boys plot then execute their escape with parkourian efficiency.. This leads to an extended MTV dance montage worthy of the King of Pop as the boys cut foot loose literally across the city. Although Director, Samit Kakkad works really hard to maintain dramatic elements throughout, the film at its core is a pure dance movie through and through.
Choreographers Umesh Jadhav and Rohan Rokade's creative dance sequences are seamlessly synced to the Bangra inspired hip-hop music selections of Ajit Sameer. Sanjay Jadhav's camerawork captures a heady city chase scenes barely catching your breath for the pop and lock dance elements packed with dizzying cross-cut and jump-cut edits. Once on their own the boys find they have something to prove to their counsellor Ms. Shivani (Amruta Khanvikar). They become determined to hone their skills in the run up to a major dance contest. Kakkad's flashback sequences provide brief but effective back stories from the boys, adding depth and clarity to their current situation. As they start mastering the art of dance, they develop a sense of fulfillment and purpose never before experiences in their young lives. Staying one step ahead of the warden, the boys set themselves up for an explosive finale.
Review: 3.5 / 5 Although Aayna Ka Bayna was successful in extracting wonderful performances from the boys, Sachin Khedekar and Amruta Khanvilkar, the film does become predictable with some narrative lapses along the way. That being said, Aayna Ka Bayna still delivers a strong message through the art of dance without being too preachy.
