Safe starring Jason Statham |
April 24 2012 – Safe, Has the Right Combination – Movie Review
With only 5 directing credits to his name and none of them in the Action Crime genre, one would surmise that writer-director Boaz Yakin would be out of his element helming a movie like Safe.
Jason Statham stars as ‘Luke Wright’ in SAFE, an Alliance Films release |
Such was not the case. From the opening scene, Yakin sets the mood as a young Mei (newcomer Catherine Chan), wise beyond her 12 years is the kidnapped math prodigy and the currency that not only allow the Triads to audit their east coast operations but retains numerical codes by memory. Throw in the Russian mob and corrupt New York city cops all vying for little Mei and the secrets she hold and the chase begins. Luke Wright (Jason Statham), an ex-cage fighter who’s best years have long since passed him comes to her rescue in an ironic twist of fate.

This is where Statham shines. As a multi-tasking, mixed martial arts death machine, Jason covets Mei as he sets the foundation to pit mob against mob against cop in a fast paced flurry of eviscerating fight scenes. Safe never pretends to be anything more than what it is and that’s it shoot’em up charm. You know what to expect in a Statham film and Safe delivers that in spades. So sit back, hold on and enjoy the sweet sounds of breaking femurs.
