January 28th, 2016 – After a successful theatrical release in Portugal, A Date with Miss Fortune opens February 5th – just in time for Valentine’s Day. The film has already pre-sold more than a thousand tickets! Get your tickets here.
A Date With Miss Fortune is a romantic comedy featuring Ryan K. Scott, Jeannette Sousa and Grammy award-winning recording artist Nelly Furtado. The film draws comparisons to movie staples such as My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Meet The Parents about clashing cultures and unexpected love. Even Joaquim De Almeida (Our Brand is Crisis, Clear and Present Danger), who portrays a disapproving Portuguese father, confessed to feeling a little like Robert De Niro in Meet the Fockers.
The film follows Jack (Ryan K. Scott), a struggling sitcom writer and Maria (Jeannette Sousa), a superstitious and traditional Portuguese girl, who fall in love after an accidental meeting at a diner. It’s a classic meet-cute in which Jack unexpectedly bumps into his now-married ex and pretends to have moved on. Maria, struggling to hold back her tears after breaking up with her fiancé, initially turns down his request. But then Maria suddenly changes her mind and steps in to save Jack, flashing her engagement rock. Little did Jack and Maria know this would be the beginning of something special.
After a romantic start, the couple must deal with the realities of competing worldviews and Maria’s disapproving Portuguese family. Her biggest challenge, however, is denying the fortune from her trusted psychic, who insists Jack is not the man for her. Is this all too much to overcome for a couple?
In between having to cope with Maria’s superstitious rituals and her disapproving family, Jack is pressured by his best friend and writing partner Wilson (Vik Sahay) to write a new sitcom to pitch to network heads. Wilson also doesn’t support the couple’s relationship, blaming Maria for Jack’s unoriginal ideas caused by “Love Brain”. (For those who’ve watched Cast Away, Wilson has one of the best lines in the movie.)
The film is written and produced by Scott and Sousa based on their own experiences as a couple, telling the audience in the theatre that the funniest and craziest parts on the film really did happen!
A Date With Miss Fortune was directed by John L’Ecuyer and stars Ryan K. Scott, Jeannette Sousa, Joaquim de Almeida (Our Brand is Crisis), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Aris Athanasopoulos, and special guests Grammy award-winning recording artist Nelly Furtado and George Stroumboulopoulos.
Verdict: A must-see for Valentine’s Day! Funny, witty, crazy, and then more funny!
