Father’s Day Gift Guide
Super Duper Alice Cooper – Welcome to His Nightmare
Here is a DVD documentary that is absolutely irresistible. You will not be able to stop watching the insightful view of one of rock’s pioneers in a very well edited and scripted documentary. We loved this one.
Super Duper Alice Cooper is the twisted tale of a teenage Dr. Jekyll whose rock n’ roll Mr. Hyde almost kills him. It is the story of Vincent Furnier, a preacher’s son who struck fear into the hearts of parents as ALICE COOPER, the ultimate rock star of the bizarre. From the advent of Alice as front man for a group of Phoenix freaks in the 60’s to the hazy decadence of celebrity in the 70s to his triumphant comeback as 80s glam metal godfather, we will watch as Alice and Vincent battle for each other’s’ souls. Alice’s story is told not only by the man himself, but through exclusive interviews with members of the original ALICE COOPER band, Elton John, Iggy Pop, John Lydon, and Dee Snider.
Brian May & Kerry Ellis – The Candlelight Concerts
The legendary guitar slinger of Queen teams up with a theater superstar and delivers a chill new take on Queen classics. Not your usual acoustic set, this one is perfect for a quiet night at home with some candles and wine. Dad may want to play this one when he wants to impress Mom.
This Blu-Ray/CD combo release features a great mix of classic songs including Born Free, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, I Who Have Nothing, Tie Your Mother Down, The Way We Were, We Will Rock You, and more.
Filmed at the renowned Stravinski Auditorium during the Montreux Jazz Festival in July 2013, The Candlelight Concerts Live At Montreux 2013 is a wonderfully intimate show that blends Kerry Ellis beautiful voice with the extraordinary guitar playing of Brian May. Throughout a largely acoustic performance of standards, ballads, Queen songs and cover songs, May’s guitar style perfectly compliments Ellis’ theatrical vocals. Also included in the set is the Acoustic By Candlelight CD, recorded live on the UK leg of their tour in Autumn 2012.
Dio – Live in London Hammersmith Apollo 1993
If an acoustic Brian May is too soft for you, may we take you for a complete 180 turn and recommend the world’s greatest Heavy Metal Singer – Ronnie James Dio. This video is pure energy and we have watched it more than any other offering on this list. Dio at his best with a band that is out of this world. Do not miss this one!
This is the first ever video release of this classic 1993 concert and includes anthems such as “Holy Diver,” “Rainbow In The Dark,” “Strange Highways,” “Stand Up And Shout,” “Man On The Silver Mountain,” “Heaven And Hell,” “We Rock,” and more. Filmed at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on December 12, 1993, this concert film captures the then newly-reformed Dio on the last night of their European tour in support of the Strange Highways album. The line-up of Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Vinny Appice (drums), Jeff Pilson (bass), Tracy G (guitar) and Scott Warren (keyboards) the band delivered a blistering performance of tracks from their new album, previous Dio classics and favorites from Ronnie’s career with Black Sabbath and Rainbow. This powerful performance is presented in DTS Surround Sound, Dolby Digital 5.1, and Dolby Digital Stereo.
Little Feat – Live In Holland 1976
Great feel good soul inspired rock n roll jams – this has become a staple on our CD player in the car. A great live vibe with some really cerebral sounds from the 70’s make this one a killer addition to the music library.
The CD+DVD set captures Little Feat’s barn-burnin’ performance at the famous Dutch festival Pinkpop on June 7 1976, and features the band’s classic line-up performing many of their best known tracks. The band includes Lowell George (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals); Richie Hayward (drums); Paul Barrere (vocals, guitar); Sam Clayton (percussion) and Kenny Gradney (bass). “Rock And Roll Doctor,” “Dixie Chicken,” “Feats Don’t Fail Me Now,” “Skin It Back,” “Teenage Nervous Breakdown,” “Fat Man In A Bathtub,” and many more beloved Little Feat tunes are highlighted on Live In Holland 1976. This is the first ever release of this concert in any format.
The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story
If I had to pick one item on this whole list it would easily be this one. The Syd Barrett story is of absolute astonishment to me, I have read the books, I have the records, and the video completes the story. An excellent documentary on the biggest rise and fall story of rock.
The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story explores the tragic, yet celebratory life of the late Syd Barrett, lead guitarist and prominent songwriter of early Pink Floyd. With contributions from all members of Pink Floyd, as well as managers, friends, and others close to Syd, the documentary traverses the tale of this enigmatic rock legend, from his intelligent, thought-provoking songwriting and indelible stamp on the psychedelic music genre, to his 1968 departure from the band, when his increasingly erratic behavior made his continued participation in the band impossible. This 2DVD set also includes the additional interview “Roger Waters On Syd Barrett,” and a second disc with bonus uncut interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, and a performance of “Love You” by Graham Coxon.
Pink Floyd was revolutionary, pushing popular music into new cerebral dimensions, and Syd Barrett was an integral part of the band’s sound and lyrics. A charismatic cult figure with a flair for eccentricity, he crafted such unique hits as “See Emily Play” and “Arnold Layne,” as well as album tracks such as “Bike” and “Astronomy Domine.” His use of dissonance, feedback, and distortion in his guitar playing has inspired generations of musicians. After leaving Pink Floyd, he recorded two solo albums before vanishing from music altogether, retiring to his English hometown of Cambridge. Fans and reporters continued to travel there to seek out the reclusive Barrett until his death in 2006, at the age of 60. At 214 minutes, The Pink Floyd & Syd Barrett Story 2DVD is an in-depth and comprehensive study of this music and cultural icon.
Toto – 35th Anniversary Live In Poland
Killer – man I forgot how amazing Hold The Line was and actually watched twice in a row when this disc was on. Truly a reflection of how powerful music was back in the day and this time capsule brings it to the modern era.
Filmed on June 25, 2013 in Lodz, Poland, the offering captures the band in the midst of a standing-room-only European tour. The two-hour plus performance features Toto’s hit stocked repertoire alongside other favorites. The complete track listing is: Intro, Medley: “On The Run” / “Child’s Anthem” / “Goodbye Eleanor,” “Goin’ Home,” “Hydra,” “St. George And The Dragon,” “I’ll Be Over You,” “It’s A Feeling,” “Rosanna,” “Wings Of Time,” “Falling In Between,” “I Won’t Hold You Back,” “Pamela,” “99,” “The Muse,” “White Sister,” “Better World,” “Africa,” “How Many Times,” “Stop Loving You,” “Hold The Line,” and “Home Of The Brave.” The set also includes behind-the-scenes bonus content.
There you have it – show Dad some love and buy one or all of the above gems and let us take care of your Father’s Day gift guide recommendations. If none of those will do then good luck on finding exciting socks for him.
