December 3 2013 – Are you wondering what to get that rock music lover in your life? Fear not we have scoured recent releases and have some incredible audio and video products that will be sure to satisfy. Whether it be a stocking stuffer or a carefully wrapped present under the tree here are some T-Mak World recommended gifts aka our Gift Guide 2013 for Rock Lovers:
Phil Naro Collection (various gifts)
Phil Naro is a Rochester born, Toronto based classic rock machine and this past year has been easily the most featured artist on T-Mak World. He is in a variety of bands both original and tribute and his voice is arguably one of the most versatile and hair-raising that exists today in all of rock. We can’t pick one thing from him so we will recommend 3 works from Naro so pick 1 or pick all 3 you can’t go wrong.
First up is a Christmas single from a band called Filthy Lying Bastards and the song is Mama I’m Coming Home For Christmas. You can download it for free or pay what you wish right here on this link. Since it is Christmas and these guys are hard working may we recommend you drop buck or two for this song if you like it.
Our second Naro recommendation is from Toronto based prog rock outfit called Druckfarben and it is a live DVD of their performance entitled Artifact. We reviewed this DVD in detail here and can’t say enough great things about it.
Third Naro associated recommendation is from hard melodic rock band DDrive and their EP entitled Intermission. DDrive really kicks ass and we were blown away seeing their live show twice this summer. The EP is presently at the pressing plant and should be ready to ship in time for the holidays. Includes immediate download of 3-track album. Order it up right here.
The Jeff Healey Band – Live From NYC (CD)
As one of Toronto’s greatest rock legends, Jeff Healey is a master of the guitar in the killer blues-rock genre. This CD is a live performance in December 1988 from The Bottom Line in New York City. Live in NYC is based on Healey’s first album (See The Light) which was also released in 1988 but also includes killer covers of Cream, John Hiatt and ZZ Top. In fact the CD which consists of 9 songs has 5 covers and 4 originals. If you like your rock guitar solo’s blistering and have never heard Healey live this release is a must have and a perfect choice for our Rocking Gift Guide 2013.
Darkside Luxury Edition (CD/Book)
Pink Floyd fans this is a MUST HAVE. The full title is Darkside, A Play for Radio by Tom Stoppard, Incorporating The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. This is essentially a radio play for the BBC to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the best classic rock album of all time. The the luxury package resembles a hard-backed book, including a CD carrying the 54-minute play, which includes the majority of The Dark Side of the Moon album, plus a 56-page bound insert of the play’s script. We enjoyed every minute of this CD and we are sure our fellow classic rock lovers that like a mind tripping story will enjoy it as well.
Move Me Brightly (Blu-Ray)
Happy 70th birthday Jerry Garcia (of the Grateful Dead). Gone too soon, but his memory is as strong as ever. Enter Move Me Brightly a Blu-Ray film that is set at Bob Weir’s studio and is part documentary and part concert performance. We get to see and hear fellow Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart and Donna Jean Godchaux along with Garcia family members and special guests such as Carlos Santana, Sammy Hagar, Mike Campbell, Perry Farrell and Stephen Perkins from Jane’s Addiction, and interviewer Luke Wilson. Very solid choice for deadheads but still a fun ride for just general rock lovers.
The Rolling Stones Sweet Summer Sun (Blu-Ray)
Quite simply – The Stones play a hometown show in London in front of 100,000 people. What more of a description do you need? It’s only Rock N Roll but we REALLY like it….
Saga: Spin it Again (Blu-Ray and CD)
We reviewed Saga’s 20/20 CD here and we reviewed their 20/20 live concert here. Combine the two and you have Saga: Spin It Again the concert movie of the 20/20 tour. We have not been able to stop watching this incredibly sounding (and looking) disc which shows Saga at their best in Munich where their German following is huge. Not only do they get the respect they deserve in Germany, this video captures the packed house for us Canadians to admire. Front man Michael Sadler is in top form and his playful interaction with the audience (as well as his admirable German language skills) is very cool. This is yet another 5 out of 5 offering from Saga – one of T-Mak World’s favourite bands.
Springsteen & I (Blu-Ray)
Springsteen & I is a unique feature music documentary celebrating a rock n roll icon: Bruce Springsteen. Working with the filmmakers, Springsteen’s fans have helped create a film that reflects on their personal insights and experiences to explore what this timeless artist means to them. Their stories are at times touching, at times humorous, at times extraordinary and they all come from the heart. Combined with previously unseen archive footage of performances throughout Springsteen’s career, this is a film by the fans and for the fans created with the full support of Bruce Springsteen.
The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone (Blu-Ray)
A powerful film that will appeal to anyone that likes a good story about a rock band. Incorporating previously unseen material spanning The Stone Roses’ history, the personal experiences of many who were touched by the band and their music, and unparalleled access to the record-breaking sellout concerts which took place in summer 2012, this is the definitive record of the definitive band of the past 25 years.
George Thorogood Live at Montreuax (Blu-Ray)
In 2013, George Thorogood & The Destroyers finally brought their hard-rockin’ blues to the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival for the first time — an event that hosted many of the artists that inspired them. Delivering a high-octane performance as only they can, the band delved into their rich repertoire, performing songs stretching back to their eponymous 1977 debut album, right up through their most recent releases. “Who Do You Love?” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” “Move It On Over,” “Bad To The Bone,” these classic and many others are all performed to perfection on Live At Montreux 2013.
