Sep 27, 2013 – It was a great double bill last Saturday as Public Animal headlined the Saturday night schedule of the Bloor Ossington Folk Festival. Little Foot Long Foot opening the free show followed by By Divine Right. Perhaps By Divine Right qualifies as folk, we missed them, but both Public Animal and Little Foot Long Foot are about as far from folk as you can get. It was the fifth local show for Public Animal and the songs are now becoming quite familiar. We last saw them at the Bovine with Mokomokai about a month ago. Little Foot Long Foot has been keeping busy around town despite singer/guitarist Joan Smith having a full schedule of White Cowbell Oklahoma shows in Europe over the past year.
As an aside, I just played LFLF’s (Ian Blurton produced) “Oh Hell” CD for the 1000th time this week. Twice a day for the last 500 days. OK, perhaps I’m not quite at 1000, but it’s not far off. At $10 for the CD, that’s $0.01 per play on 10 outstanding songs. I don’t think that’s fair, perhaps I should pay for it again… It is easily in my personal top 10 favourite albums of all time.
Public Animal
Still not exactly sure what the venue was so it will by necessity have to remain nameless. Public Animal was, as is now to be expected, incredible and loud. The band has been recording a cover of Deep Purple’s Lay Down Stay Down for a 7″ single with Mokomokai. Earlier this week, via Twitter, Blurton hinted at “great news on Public Animal front”. Since he didn’t elaborate, we can only speculate, it could be anything but perhaps they’ve now settled on the producer for their highly anticipated upcoming album.
It was Public Animal’s second local show of the week, following a Wednesday show at Filmores Gentlemen’s Club on Dundas. That was an unusual experience to say the least. Despite the mid-week Wednesday night show, the club was filled to capacity and was standing room only, which of course at the Bovine Sex Club, or any of the other venues around the city is pretty much the norm, at a strip joint, standing is a little strange. But sitting on a leather couch for a Public Animal show just felt wrong and despite the capacity crowd, until the last couple of songs, the energy level wasn’t at a typical Public Animal show level.
Perhaps due to the novelty of a rock show at a strip joint, the the crowd was surprisingly evenly split between male and female, which would not be unusual for the Bovine of course. What made it extra strange was a stripper dancing nude onstage during the opening act. It was like a scene in a movie. Public Animal was unaccompanied when they played which was probably for the best. There are, obviously, no photos available for that night’s show.
Public Animal’s next show is at The Garrison on November 23rd with Diemonds so that’s definitely a show not to be missed.

It was a treat to have two of T-Mak World’s favourite bands on the same bill and as usual, both put on great shows.
