September 9, 2013 – Tonight T-Mak World had the pleasure of watching the World Premiere of iNumber Number, written and directed by South African filmmaker Donovan Marsh, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Filmed in South Africa, iNumber Number is the story of two cops, Chili and Shoes, tag teaming it to outwit some of Soweto’s nastiest criminals.
The opening scene is bloody and gruesome and shows Chili (S’dumo Mtshali) kill his opponents with precision thanks to the eyes and ears of his 10-year partner Shoes (Presley Chweneyagae), who, unbeknownst to the criminals, is using his cell phone to guide Chili on his next move. When the cops’ boss cheats them from getting paid a big reward for their work, Chili is angry and desperate for cash. He decides to go undercover against Shoe’s wishes to participate in a one-time cash heist to score $400K. Accepted by the gang-leader as a trusted partner, Chili soon runs into issues – a gangster in the group recognizes Chili is a cop and Shoes tries to intervene only to get caught.
This is an action packed movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, not knowing what to expect next. Particularly enjoyable was how Marsh cleverly interjected comedy where you least expect it, keeping the mood light and entertaining.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 – A compelling mix of genres that does not fail to entertain. This film is certainly worthy of wide distribution in North America.
