September 11, 2013 – Manuel Martin Cuenca‘s Cannibal is a disturbing love story featuring antihero Carlos (Antonio de la Torre), a hardworking, prestigious tailor who leads a quiet life with few interactions outside of work. He is also a guiltless murderer, who preys on innocent women, remorselessly kills them, and then takes them to his rustic cabin in the snowy Sierra Nevada to be hung and carefully butchered. His freezer and fridge are filled to capacity with cuts of female flesh, which he meticulously prepares and savours each night with a glass of fine red wine.
Carlos has an innate need to remain distant from people, emotionally and physically. This is made more difficult when Romanian massage therapist Nina (Olimpia Melinte) comes into Carlos’ life looking for support and affection. For the first time ever, Carlos falls in love, and invites Nina to spend a weekend escape at his cabin in the mountains. There, Carlos struggles with who he is; he is caught between his love for Nina over his need to kill and cannibalize her. Will love end up conquering all?
Verdict: 3.5/5 Cuenca’s Cannibal is film noir at its finest, and shows us evil incarnate hidden in the mundane existence of everyday life. Stunning scenery with powerful acting by de la Torre – a must see.
