Rival Sons

January 9 2013 – At the end of 2012 T-Mak World published our Top 10 Albums of 2012. In the number 5 spot we had Heads Down by LA band Rival Sons. This is what we had to say about that album:

“Rival Sons have a fan you may have heard of before – Jimmy Page. Not only has Page been preaching to Rolling Stone magazine about how great the band is, he was spotted at their gig in London this year. Just as Led Zeppelin took inspiration from old blues greats such as Willie Dixon and Sonny Boy Williamson – Rival Sons clearly took inspiration from Led Zeppelin. The LA band has come out strong with “Head Down” and honestly this record will please all fans of 70’s style rock. The album includes booming arena anthems as well as slowed down mellow blues. If there is a next big monster rock act in the vein of Led Zeppelin or U2 this is the band. I am certain that “Head Down” will be considered the album that ensured Rival Sons get really noticed. Keep on Swinging and Until The Sun Comes are essential songs but to get that Led Zeppelin feel spend some time listening to Manifest Destiny (Part 1) and (Part 2).” 

As luck would have it the band announced a Canadian tour that we are fully endorsing as one of our must-see gigs. This is one show that should not be missed no matter what. Of particular interest is the Lee’s Palace stop in Toronto on February 15th (a show we plan on reviewing).  Below is the press release we received:

Rival Sons

Rival Sons, based out of Long Beach, CA, has the distinction of being one of the first American bands in decades to chart in Canada without help from the US Charts. Their debut single ‘Pressure and Time’ launched the band into the forefront of the minds of Canadian rock radio programmers and music fans alike. “Pressure And Time”, peaked at #6 on the Rock Radio Charts, and the follow-up, “Face Of Light”, reached #20 on Active Rock Charts. “Keep On Swinging” is current at #2 on the Rock Radio Charts, increasing in spins week after week.

After country-wide acclaim that greeted Rival Sons’ debut album “PRESSURE & TIME,” Canadian fans have been primed for the band’s return with one of the year’s most ostensibly rock record of the year. ‘HEAD DOWN,’ declared by Artist Direct as “timeless as it is tough, and it’s everything rock music needs and more…” debuted in the Top 40 on Canadian Soundscan Sales Charts. The first video for the album, “Keep on Swinging,” was one of the most requested on MuchMusic for the fall season and received airplay on MTV and Aux TV. With over 400,000 views in less than four months, it will likely be their second video with over one million views, following “Pressure and Time.” 

Since the summer of 2012, Rival Sons have seen a steady march into rock’s mainstream. Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page attended their London show, and namechecked the band in a recent Rolling Stone cover story.  After performing at the Classic Rock awards in 2011, they returned in 2012 to accept the award for Breakthrough band of the Year.  This month, the magazine voted them Band Of The Year and put them on the cover.
