December 20, 2012 – The Reason rocked The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on Tuesday night. Normally I would drop the “Legendary” when mentioning the Horseshoe. It’s a little pretentious to call yourself Legendary but it really is true in this case. The Horseshoe is celebrating its 65th anniversary. The Horseshoe has featured acts like The Rolling Stones, The Police and every local and Canadian act worth mentioning. My personal Horseshoe highlight came on March 11, 1989 when the surviving members of The Band, less Levon Helm, including Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson, reformed for a short set (only 6 or maybe 7 songs as I remember) with Colin Linden’s band. They were in town that weekend to receive a Lifetime Achievement Juno award.

On this Tuesday there was a dual celebration. Dave Bookman, aka Bookie, is leaving 102.1 The Edge radio. And as fans of local music know, Tuesdays are Bookie’s Nu Music Nite, a series that features great upcoming acts with no cover charge. We hope the Tuesday night series continues.

Also on the bill were The Order of Good Cheer who played an entertaining set and a young band called Glorious Sons, a young but promising bunch of rockers who played a high energy show with great melodies. They drew a huge crowd of friends and family who all knew their songs and sang along. Sadly for that crowd though, they all left after Glorious Sons’ set and missed The Reason!!

But this night was all about The Reason. The band kicked it into high gear opening with The Longest Highway Home and carried right on from there. The set also included songs like Come and Go, Where Do We Go From Here? and lots of their other great songs. They played a couple news songs including Drive Me Home, which are destined to be big radio hits. It was an incredible performance and they taught the other bands on the bill how a pro band rocks.
Their pal, Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford, was also at the Horseshoe (but sadly I didn’t see him). The band filmed a short video with Axford called Mo’jor League.
