December 2, 2012 – Burton Cummings headlined the Molson Canadian 100th Grey Cup Festival Pre-Game Party on Sunday afternoon immediately before the big game. It was at the same venue as the April Wine, Kim Mitchell, Big Sugar show the night before but it was only in Hall D reflecting the fact that at $175 for tickets, there would be a lot less people there. That said, it was still a huge audience. At least food and drinks were included for the price.

The last time I saw Cummings live was many years ago at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. In fact, it was probably still The Diamond at that point. Cummings was an hour or an hour and a half late getting on stage that night but the wait was well worthwhile as he treated us to one of the best shows I’ve ever seen in a club, before or since. Break It To Them Gently was absolute magic that night, just it was this time around. This time the show was at 3:30 in the afternoon, an unusual time for a rock concert and far too early to be singing as Burton reminded us a few times.

It was one incredible song after another for an hour and a half performed perfectly and sung beautifully. It’s a testament to his incredible career that he can play hit after hit for an hour and a half and have so many more huge songs that he could have played. He barely scratched the surface of his hits. The list of huge hit songs he could have played would have more than filled another show, Undun, Hang On To Your Life, I’m Scared, Your Backyard, I Will Play a Rhapsody, Sour Suite, Star Baby, Fine State of Affairs, Meanin’ So Much, Draggin’ ‘Em Down the Line, Timeless Love. How about an encore of Shakin’ All Over? Absolutely amazing to have such a deep catalog.

Burton Cummings is a recipient of the Order of Canada, he has two stars Canada’s on Walk of Fame and numerous gold and platinum records. He is a living national treasure and it was a pleasure to finally see him perform live again. It was an amazing show.

She was very witty and had a sexy grin when she talked to the audience between songs. It definitely doesn’t hurt at all that she’s really hot. There was one song about Marty McSorley and Wayne Gretzky called I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory (which I have to admit, I didn’t actually get, but nevermind, I guess if I cared enough I could read the lyrics). Anyway, she and the band rocked out and left the crowd, myself included, wanting to hear more.
