The Blue Stones |
October 30, 2012 – The Blue Stones may be based in Windsor but Toronto is becoming a home base for the band. They were here for CMW in March when they played The Sister, the Horseshoe Tavern in May, back at The Sister again in June for NXNE, where they were an honorable mention for gig of the night, the Silver Dollar in July and the Horseshoe again in August. On Friday, October 26th, they were back in town playing their first show at The Bovine Sex Club for the launch of their fantastic new CD “How’s That Sound?”

We’ve covered the band several times, they were an Emerging Artist Spotlight and were on our recommendations list for both CMW and NXNE . The Blue Stones is heavy blues-roots rock in the mold of The Black Keys. The band is a duo but Justin Tessier’s drums seem to expand to fit available space such that their live performances never feel to be lacking in instrumentation. Guitarist/vocalist Tarek Jafar rocks out with the best of them.

We will have a review of the 7-track CD up soon but suffice to say every track is killer. Comparisons have been to The Black Keys in the past and this CD is also in that vein with some hard driving guitar riffs on songs like Criminals which they played on Friday night. One song we’ve heard a couple times now is Rolling With The Punches, it’s destined to be a fan favourite along with I’m a Stereo and Vain Vixens.
