Nobody could ever mistake Grave Encounters 2 as anything but “Horror Popcorn Fare – Lite”. Sure it covers off the proverbial horror genre checklist: Frat boy Hijinks (ü ), Tween Angst (ü), Creepy Back Story (ü), Cryptic Messages (ü), Abandoned Mental Institute (ü), and Random Eviscerations (üü ). However, all hopes of breaking new horror ground just doesn’t materialize.
Picking up from where the 2011 found footage horror film Grave Encounters left off, Alex Wright, (Richard Harmon) a young film student continues to obsess about the story of the missing TV crew along with finishing his film thesis. And thus he wrangles his closest film school friends on a quest to document and find answers to the missing crew by breaking into the mental institution.
What ensues is a myriad of random corridor chases, superficial character developments stitched together with flashback scenes and gore lite. In its defence, one well-crafted plot twist using the elevator as a portal which flipped the script midway through was smartly executed but not enough to salvage this film.
Grave Encounters 2 could have been and should have been so much more than the safety conscious tween friendly horror we’ve seen so many time before.
