Hugh Jackman stars in Real Steel |
Sep 29 2011 – Tonight we attended an advanced screening of Real Steel thanks to the very good entertainment site The Gate: Entertainment Magazine.
Real Steel is a Sci-Fi/Action movie set in the future in which robot boxing is a big sport. Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie Kenton. Charlie is an ex-boxer that now operates these boxing robots, and who also just reunites with his 11 year old son Max (Dakota Goyo). They take an old beat up robot and spice it up to get all the way to the title shot. (Sounds like Rocky, right?) Mixed in the awesome fight scenes are the obligatory father-son relationship building moments. Evangeline Lilly plays the love interest in the mix and does a decent job of the task. The movie itself is very formulaic and predictable, but that is to be expected I guess. What makes it stand out is massive 2000 pound remote controlled robots smashing the metal bolts out of each other. Loud music gets the audience nice and rowdy at the matches – I just want to know when these fights are coming to the real world cause it looks like a blast being in one of those arenas watching the destruction.
The movie enters wide distribution on October 7 2011, has an $80M production budget and runs just over 2 hours. Watch the trailer below:
Verdict: 2000 pound robots fighting! Who cares that the rest of the movie was predictable and formulaic, the sound of metal punching metal was awesome.
