Supertramp in Toronto 2011

June 12 2011 – Supertramp rolled into Toronto as part of their 2010/2011 tour to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the band's first album back in 1970. The origins of the band trace back to two key musicians Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies who had an incredible 13 year run before they parted ways. The current incarnation unfortunately does not feature Hodgson whose distinct voice was what gave Supertramp their unique sound. As is often the case of bands that tour without their original creative forces, there is a lack of authenticity – and when original members reunite even for only one song there is magic in the air for all in attendance (as evidenced by David Gilmour recently joining Roger Waters for Comfortably Numb). Nonetheless Supertramp have sold 60 million records and are undeniably part of the upper echelon of classic rock acts. The nearly sold out show proved that good music lives on and that Supertramp can deliver exactly what that audience wants.

Supertramp played a nice 20 song and half of those songs were from the killer Breakfast In America and Crime Of The Century albums. The show itself was fairly low key with minimal effects and let the audience focus on the music itself. On stage there were as many as 11 musicians at any given time so there was full sound that mimicked the complexity of the albums. The audience was sitting most of the night but that was not because they were bored or not into the music, they were simply absorbing the full experience and the nature of Supertramp's music which is best enjoyed by relaxing (like you did when you first heard the albums with headphones).

Verdict: Very nice way to kick off the 2011 summer concert season and overall a great gig. I had some videos on YouTube but they had to be taken down due to apperent copyright violations (but you can still find other peoples videos of the show by doing a search)
