TimeGiant at Cherry Cola’s March 1 2013 |
March 3 2013 – The winner of T-Mak World‘s best gig of Canada Music Week 2012 and NXNE 2012 as well as one of our Top 10 Indie Bands of 2012 were back in action yet again. Easily our most covered Indie band, we simply can not get enough of these guys and tonight once again proved why. We are a music review site spawned from the love of classic rock such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Rush and Rival Sons (yes you dont have to be in your 70’s to be considered world class classic rock in our humble opinion). Depending on your musical taste TimeGiant may or may not be the best hard rock band in the city, but for us this is what the future of classic hard rock sounds and looks like.

Cherry Cola’s Rock N Rola was packed for the midnight set time for TimeGiant and the band delighted old and new fans alike. The band is oozing talent and not only do they sound the classic rock part they smartly look the part as well. Long hair, denim wearing rockers that would have fit in easily in any high school in Toronto in the late 70’s. To illustrate how cool this band is before they perform they gather around the drum kit and get in a circle holding each others hands in the air in a ritual reminiscent of a druid ritual around Stonehenge (or perhaps a funny scene out of Spinal Tap).
Then with the energy of 100 tsunamis’ the band kicks into high gear with hair flying and heads banging. If you are into hard classic rock and never seen TimeGiant live before I am certain that you will be a fan in the first minute of hearing them.
TimeGiant has released 2 CD’s. Their first album, an EP called Time with four songs on it was well represented tonight with White Window, Candy From A Feather and The Pressure being played. However not one single song from their excellent second record Grow was played. Instead the band opted to continue showcasing their new material and the remaining six songs played are songs that are not found on any CD or available for purchase (yet). As a self professed hardcore TimeGiant fan I am still waiting to hear live what in my opinion is their most interesting song called After the Battle At Mt. Megiddo – an epic 7 minute track that could have been found on Rush’s 2112.

Highlights were very strong renditions of Blind, Farcaster and White Window. Never to dissapoint the crowd singalongs Been Here Before and Hard Lovin Woman had the faithful at Cherry Cola’s singing along. What has become a staple of the band’s shows in the last few months is a Bonzo inspired drum solo from McKittrick who with his animal like appearance on the kit blows away the crowd each and every time he does his solo. My only complaint is the same one I have had for many months (and its more of an inside joke at this point) – I wish upon a star that McKittrick’s solo would go long and far…..

Just for fun I looked up what I wrote almost one year ago before I knew the guys well. This is from when I first saw TimeGiant and guess what… the song does indeed remain the same.
So far we have seen dozens of great bands (and a handful of excellent bands), but most of them lack presence. TimeGiant had the crowd going crazy tonight (unlike any other band we have seen at CMW). There were sing alongs, dual guitarists coming to the front of the stage with solo riffs, a shirtless drummer with a Bonzo tattoo, a bassist giving fist bumps to the audience, a double neck guitar, a saxophone, an epic 10 minute progressive classic that could have been off of Rush’s 2112 album, and 4 dudes having fun being rock stars. TimeGiant is a band with a perfect blend of heavy and progressive rock that could have been made in 1972 or 2012. If there is any justice in the world, TimeGiant will be opening up for the Foo Fighters on their next tour! An epic mix of Rush, Triumph, Black Crowes, Zeppelin and Floyd are how I would define TimeGiant.
