Son of 1000

T-Mak World coverage of Canadian Music Week 2013 is centralized here – your one stop guide for rock at this year’s festival.

March 12 2013 –Canadian Music Week 2013 is almost here and we can’t wait for hundreds of bands to invade the bars and clubs of our fair city of Toronto as part of the festival’s Canadian Music Fest program. Admittedly the names are slightly confusing but Canadian Music Week is the master name of the festival that is composed of a film program (Canadian Music Week Film Fest), a comedy program (Canadian International Comedy Fest), a conference, awards shows, a trade show and a kick ass music festival called Canadian Music Fest (CMF) that runs between March 19-24 2013.

In 2012, T-Mak World initiated extensive coverage of Canadian Music Fest and we saw a total of 34 bands/artists and interviewed the following 10 bands as part of our Emerging Artist Spotlight series:
Beta from Puebla, Mexico (Alternative,Grunge,Rock)
Breaching Vista from Kitchener, Ontario (Alternative,Pop,Rock)

Floor Thirteen from Winnipeg, Manitoba (Alternative,Rock)
Grain from Edmonton, Alberta (Blues,Classic Rock,Rock)
In My Coma from Toronto, Ontario (Alternative,Progressive,Rock )
Last Bullet from Toronto, Ontario (Classic Rock,Rock)
Matt Groopie and The Bandits  from Thornhill, Ontario (Blues, Classic Rock, Psychedelic Rock )
One Bad Son from Vancouver, B.C.  (Rock)
Louder Than Love from Vancouver, B.C.  (Rock)
TimeGiant from Toronto, Ontario (Rock)

Our wrap up article from 2012 is here and we are excited to be back in 2013 and to add even more bands to our Emerging Artist Spotlight Series. Today we focus on a band from Johannesburg, South Africa and their CMF profile reads:
SON OF 1OOO is an alternative rock band based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The band consists of four passionate musicians comprising of Shaun “Soulo” Parsons (Vox), Federico Fernandez (Guitar), Darin Collins (Bass) and Graham Shaw (Drums). Their music is a new avenue of alternative rock called “Velvet Rock” that reminds us of Queens of the Stone Age, White stripes with Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin textures. The strongest and most impactful thing about SON OF 1OOO is their electrifying live show that will leave even the most hardened critic waiting to attend the next show.
Here is what they had to say to us:
1. Hey Son of 1000, thanks for taking the time out to talk to us. Let’s start off with the obligatory introductions. Who’s in the band and what instrument does everyone rock?
SON OF 1OOO: Well, we have Shaun “Soulo” Parsons, one of the best singers you’ll ever hear, we have Federico Fernandez on guitar bringing Jimi Hendrix back to life; “sir psycho sexy” Darin Collins on the funky bass and Graham Shaw on drums bringing the groove.
2. How about the history of the band, when did you get started and how did it happen?
SON OF 1OOO: The history is amazing, Federico jammed with Darin a long time ago when Darin used to live in South Africa and then moved to Canada, so when the news that SON OF 1OOO was confirmed to plat at CMF, Fede called Darin and Darin hooked with Graham and it has all been done via the marvelous internet. Fede and Shaun comes from South Africa and Darin and Graham are in Canada, KAPOW!

3. Who are some of your musical influences?
SON OF 1OOO: The question would be, who is not an influence in SON OF 1OOO, we are influenced by absolutely everything, from rock to funk, to jazz, to pop, to experimental, to blues, to latin… Music has no boundaries, so why should SON OF 1OOO have any?
4. Well I would answer because some “music” sucks these days, but lol ya I get your point. Congratulations on being selected to play at Canadian Music Festival, what does the opportunity mean to you?
SON OF 1OOO: It means so much, it means that we are doing something right, it means that all the sweat, blood and tears are not in vain, it means that it’s true what they say that if you have a dream, follow it no matter what and one day it will come true. It’s such an honor for SON OF 1OOO to be able to share the music with a different audience, well, let’s see the response, maybe they will chase us with tomatoes ;)
5. When and where is your CMF gig? And more importantly, why should a music fan come and see your show instead of all the other choices available to them at that time?
SON OF 1OOO: Our show will be at Brooklyn on the 20th at 1:00 AM, we are closing the night that night. Why? Well, we have a pretty rad live show, the energy that flows on our shows is magical, the audience become one with the band, SON OF 1OOO is not a posed band, we joke on stage, we are very relaxed, we are not here to show you what we can do but, to share it with the audience as one. Plus, I have to say that we have one of the most electrifying shows… But now, it’s up to you…

6. What’s it like being on stage? Do you get nervous or are you thriving on the adrenaline (or somewhere in between)?
SON OF 1OOO: To be on stage is a very religious experience for us, it’s a moment in time that you are the most honest, there is no time to think but to feel, to let go and expose your bare soul to the people that are there, there is no time to try to be someone you are not, you are a channel there, nothing else, you are a pipe from pure creativity, to the land of the living. That moment is magical, on that moment you are connected to the divine and you get hooked, you need more, that rush is the best drug ever, no waiting time, no better high and pretty healthy!
7. What does 2013 hold for you?
SON OF 1OOO: 2013 has been surreal until now and I have faith that it will be the best year for SON OF 1OOO, starting the year being confirmed to play CMF, going back for a national tour in South Africa, crossing fingers as today we will know if our new album “To Jump With Eyes Closed” was nominated for the South African Music Awards for best rock album… pretty interesting times… Recording a new album this year… Busy, busy, busy!
8. Imagine that you were asked to be the opener for any band’s world tour (both current and historical). Which band and tour would be your dream opening gig.
SON OF 1OOO: Well, the thing is that SON OF 1OOO has such and interesting input process as each of us has a very different taste in music, that is what makes SON OF 1OOO such a unique band, but I suppose to open for Led Zeppelin, Santana, Hendrix, White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age wouldn’t be a bad gig!! Not to throw the towel but we opened the 2010 FIFA world cup concert in South Africa and it was AMAZING, I remember going to a solo and 27000 people screaming together and that energy going through me, I was in heaven!

9. How important is the performer/audience connection? Can you rock a show as hard for 10 people as if you could playing an 80,000 person festival?
SON OF 1OOO: Yes, when we start playing, we get lost in the music, we are lucky that when we play our music, we really enjoy it and when the artist enjoys the music it translates to the crowd and the crowd do it as well, I like both, I like the 80,000 experience because of the adrenaline and the energy and I like the 10 people as it becomes very intimate, very personal, the two sides of the story work for me, it’s a different approach but the crowd gets rocked no matter what, there is no escape!
10. Where can people get your music/CD, is it being sold anywhere?
SON OF 1OOO: You know, we have been signed with Universal Music and other big labels and never saw a cent from anywhere, now that we took the selling in our hands, all the sales come to us and I suppose people need to know that as every album we sell, it comes to us and not to a big corporation, so hopefully we will have album to sell at our show on the 20th but you guys can always go to and download the albums from there or send us a message and we’ll post it to you anywhere in the world! I want to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you that bought and keep buying our albums: thanks to you, we are playing CMF!
11. At the end of 2012 we published our picks for top 10 albums of 2012. Lists like those are always a reflection of personal tastes so if you were making the list what are some albums you would you have had on it?
SON OF 1OOO: To jump with eyes closed by SON OF 1OOO!! ;)

12. Any closing remarks for our readers?
