February 10 2013 – Rarely does a science fiction fantasy thriller weave a global marketing agenda of mind control that ultimately jettisons into other worldly dimensions of animation. But, the ambitious musings of writer/director Jamie Bradshaw and Alexander Doulerain have created a world where global corporate marketing and subversive brandwashing becomes the new contact sport in Branded.
In post communist Russia, marketing visionary Misha Galkin (Ed Stoppard) is the brain child behind a series of great campaigns but when a giant conspiracy gets traction around a cosmetic surgery themed reality show he’s producing with Abby Gibbons (Leelee Sobieski) thing start unravelling. The whole show is actually a conspiracy orchestrated by the fast food industry lead by an evil marketing guru Max Von Sydow who is try to make ‘fat’ the new standard of ‘beauty’.
As things become overwhelming, Misha needs to reset by escaping to the countryside. His marketing campaign escalates into hideous delusions which not only affect his relationship with Abby but start to affect his grasp on reality.
Branded is by far the most unconventional sci-fantasy I have seen in years. Refusing to paint within the standard cinematic lines, Branded defies stereotypical genre references by challenges its viewers through new marketing paradigms. Some narrative devices, (in particular the talking cow) falls flat in their execution but all in all Branded is still an entertaining movie.
Verdict: 3/5 – Branded makes the right pitch.
