Caitlin Dacey of Bella Clava and Matt Weston of Dyadics |
January 24 2013 – T-Mak World presents Indie On Indie where we match up two musicians of different bands and give them the task to review one of the other band’s songs. In this ongoing series we will match up bands with similar styles of music, as well as bands on opposite sides of the musical spectrum. Kick back, listen to each tune and read what the other band has to say about it. If you have a suggestion for a cool match up or are in a band and want to be featured email us here.
- Artist 1 – Caitlin Dacey is the vocalist and keyboardist of Toronto’s classic rock powerhouse Bella Clava. The song she picked for Artist 2 to review is Ding Dong Ditch.
- Artist 2 – Matt Weston is the drummer of London’s dancy riff rock juggernaut Dyadics. The song he picked for Artist 1 to review is Dead and Gone (Radio Edit).
Ding Dong Ditch by Bella Clava
I hadn’t heard Bella Clava before but upon reading their bio on Pure Grain Audio, my expectations were set very high. I’m a huge fan of c’mon and generally love the vibe Ian Blurton gets out of artists he works with. Seeing that Blurton recorded this disc and seeing the other names that they’ve worked with (Steve Albini being a prime example), I knew this was going to be good. I was right.

The track opens with a heavy Deep Purple vibe. It might just be because of the distorted organ filling out the sound but it compliments the guitars well. A nice, tight drum sound provided by Zack Mykula drives the verses along with a great bass line from Scott Hannigan, later doubled on guitar by Steve Suttie. Lead singer Caitlin Dacey’s vocal soars nicely over the menacing band and provides a great hook in the chorus. The 70s vibe continues in an unexpected bridge with an eerie piano line evocative of some of The Doors’ work. Guitarist Suttie takes over for an awesome guitar solo before the band regroups to vamp the chorus and provide a piano led outro. The end leaves you feeling just a little unsatisfied in a way that only unresolved chords and an amazing song can do – that is to say, it definitely leaves you wanting more. A lot more.

Kennedy and Weston are clearly an excellent team. They craft hooky, catchy tunes that are dark with a sugar coating. Fortunately for music fans, the duo have made time to write and record material for The Dyadics despite their busy schedules performing and playing in various other projects.
Verdict: I would like to thank both Caitlin and Matt for taking out the time to review another Indie band’s song. Good music belongs together and we can strongly recommend both of these bands next time they are playing near you. ROCK LOUD! {T-Mak}
