Oct 9 2012 – Love Reign O’er Me is the first part of the Behind Blue Eyes series. 4 books are planned and 2 have been released so far. The first book of the series is Anne-Marie Klein’s debut novel. Klein a native of Toronto is passionate about rock music and The Who (thus the name of the series Behind Blue Eyes, as well as the name of the first two books; Love Reign O’Er Me). We had a chance to interview Klein and you can read that interview here.
The story begins in downtown Toronto in 1978 where a young couple (Sarah and Ian) meet randomly while shopping for LP’s. They very quickly hook up and we get introduced to Sarah’s family including her record company owning father. Ian has just moved back to Toronto from England where he was living for most of his life with ambitions to be a rock star. They fall madly in love and the two teenagers form a band. This is not a love story though as they quickly break up and do their best to unintentionally hurt each other. The break up involves Ian’s hidden demons that involve his mother and her death and things soon spiral into a dark corridor of hatred, self abuse and violence. The book plays like an emotional rollercoaster for the reader taking them to the heights of ecstacy and to the abysmall depths of desperation and depression. Overall a great ride and highly recommended (particularly for anyone growing up in the rock and roll landscape of Toronto). Klein has successfully created likeable characters and even more successfully captured their personas.
You can get more information on the book’s website and link to purchase right here.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 – Powerful story that takes the reader on an emotional voyage of epic proportions – like real Rock N’ Roll this story is about real struggle and a celebration of life.
“Little ditty about Sarah and Ian, two Canadian kids growing up in the urban jungle”
