Most Thieves at Toronto September 2012 |
Most Thieves played a 30 minute set consisting of songs from their debut album, “Unnecessary Maps” and delighted the crowd waiting for The Killers with good rocking tunes. Many of those in attendance had their first exposure to Most Thieves and the band certainly came away with a few new fans. Kudos to The Killers for supporting their fellow Las Vegas natives. Most Thieves have been added to the shows in Las Vegas in late December with Tegan and Sara, a Canadian duo who will also support The Killers as the opening act on the tour. If all goes well for Most Thieves, there will be a few thousand people that can say we saw them open for The Killers at Sound Academy.

During the short break to setup one could feel the excitement building in the crowd. The crowd exploded like a volcano as The Killers delivered an 89 minute powerhouse of a show that rocked the Sound Academy to its foundations. Most of the night the enthusiastic crowd had hands up in the air and were jumping up and down as they sang every word in loud unison.

Like many of the great front man from rock bands thru the ages, Brandon Flowers knows how to work the crowd like a master craftsmen. While it is true that Flowers has the sex appeal of a pop icon to pull in the sub 25 female crowd, The Killers also appeal to a wider and very diverse audience who are coming to attend a party with catchy rocking anthems from a live band.

The Killers played a mix of their most popular songs from the previous 3 albums with 6 songs from the new album. The highlights of the show included the crowd turning up the energy for Somebody Told Me and Human and the K-shaped and lightning bolt shaped confetti than rained on the audience during All These Things That I’ve Done. A Dustland Fairytale was accompanied with a huge disco ball lighting the venue up like the good old days of lasers in rock shows. However like many acts, The Killers leave the best for last. In this case in the guise of the finale, When You Were Young. Before playing When You Were Young, Flowers told the audience they were going to play it hard as they can and asked the audience if they were willing to receive it as hard as they can.

Verdict: 4 out of 5. Brandon Flowers continues to prove he is one of the great leading men touring today, he connected with the crowd from the first note and held them till he walked off stage. The intense guitar riffs and the crowd singing along while jumping all night created a party atmosphere usually seen at a rave as opposed to a concert. If you have not seen The Killers live, get a ticket for December and check out a couple videos from their shows and come ready to parrr…ty. Overall this was one of the best small venue gigs that Toronto has ever seen from a band that is evolving its sound on each record.
