We have featured almost 100 Emerging Artists on T-Mak World but today we feature one of the most exciting bands we have ever interviewed. British band The Temperance Movement. Canada, you heard about them here first!
September 17 2013 – Very few things are as exciting as finding something new you love. Much like archeologists that dig to find hidden treasures, we here at T-Mak World really enjoy trying to find new bands that we love. Once we find such bands, we approach our favorites to request interviews for our Emerging Artist Spotlight series. Today we set our focus on a band from England named The Temperance Movement. The band is signed to Earache Records along with our favorite band of the last decade – Rival Sons (check out our review of their show in London, Canada here) All bands we talked to are asked similar questions to each other so we can get to know them better. The Temperance Movement blend crafted harmonies, rich laconic rock n roll swagger and earthy, folk tinged melodies with the British blues explosion. All answers below are from the band’s bassist Nick Fyffe
1. Hey The Temperance Movement, thanks for taking the time out to talk to us. Let’s start off with the obligatory introductions. Who’s in the band and what instrument does everyone rock?
The Temperance Movement – Phil Campbell – Vocals, Luke Potashnick and Paul Sayer – Guitars, Nick Fyffe – Bass and Damon Wilson – Drums. We all sing backing vocals.
2. How about the history of the band, when did you get started and how did it happen?
The Temperance Movement: We very first got together as a band in November of 2011. Luke, Phil and Paul had already been writing together for several months previously with the intention of starting a band.
We’ve all been session musicians and played in other bands and already knew each other before either personally or by reputation but the ultimate goal as a musician is to be a part of a band and be in control of your own destiny. When we first got in a room together to play, it was pretty exciting. There was a real buzz and I knew it was something i wanted to be a part of. At first the gigs were sporadic as everyone had different commitments but whenever we were all available, we’d book gigs in. We’ve all been working hard towards making this happen and thankfully the work seems to be paying off. We’ve managed to make this a full time thing now. Long may it continue!
3. Who are some of your musical influences?
The Temperance Movement: Between us we have a pretty broad range of influences. I’d say everything from Faces, Free, Dylan, Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival to Little Feat, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, The Black Crowes and maybe even a little Black Sabbath. It’s all in there!
4. So based on the above how would you describe your music to someone that has never heard it?
The Temperance Movement: It’s Rock’nRoll with Soul. Rock’n’Soul if you like.
5. Great answer, I like that a lot! Why should a music fan come and see your show instead of all the other choices available to them on any given night?
The Temperance Movement: We announced our Autumn tour a short while ago and people have been buying tickets to not just one show but 3 or 4. That’s gotta say something!
6. Truly amazing, we hope Canada gets to see you soon! What is your favorite single line of lyrics the band has written and why?
The Temperance Movement: I like the line “love don’t wait around for you to catch on, try to work it out, you won’t before it’s gone” from Chinese Lanterns. Wise words!
7. What does 2013 hold for you?
The Temperance Movement: A lot of touring, some touring and more touring. Actually there’s so much going on right now that i haven’t thought past November yet. I’m hoping we’ll get out to the four corners of the world.
8. Imagine that you were asked to be the opener for any band’s world tour (either current and historical). Which band and tour would be your dream opening gig.
The Temperance Movement: I imagine the Stones ’72 tour might be interesting.
9. What is the future of the music industry? With the concept of the album and physical CD’s facing extinction, how will we be consuming music in 10 years? Are the economics feasible for emerging artists?
The Temperance Movement: Who knows? Perhaps we’ll have chips implanted that can download music from the cloud straight to our brains and we won’t even need ears! Thankfully some people do still like to have a physical copy of an album. I’ve always loved having the artwork and reading the credits. We’re releasing our album on CD, Vinyl (which is enjoying a renaissance) and even cassette!.
It’s certainly tough for new artists. We’re very much a live band and have been lucky to have attracted a growing audience who keep coming back to shows but it’s expensive to go out on tour and everybody knows that music sales aren’t what they used to be. ISP’s are beginning to block torrent sites so maybe illegal file sharing can be lessened but that’s not the only threat. The fact is, music has become devalued. People, and especially younger people don’t see why they should pay for it. I don’t think anyone really knows where the industry is headed. It’s almost impossible to make enough money to sustain a career through say, Spotify as the revenue stream is so low but there are other ways to make money. I guess that’s why a lot of bigger artists now launch their own perfume or clothing label or headphones. Dre has made more money from Beats headphones than he ever did from producing records and he’s had a huge amount of hits. So much is about branding now. I don’t think that there’ll be Eau de Temperance Movement anytime soon though!
10. Where can people get your music/CD, is it being sold anywhere?
The Temperance Movement: Our Album came out on September 16th 2013 and is available for order here. It will be available from itunes, amazon, from our live shows and our website www.thetemperancemovement.com
{Ed. Note – we checked out the store and almost all the limited edition vinyl copies are sold out so hurry up and buy if you want to own a piece of history!!}
11. At the end of 2012 we published our picks for top 10 albums of 2012. Lists like those are always a reflection of personal tastes so if you were making the list what are some albums you would you have had on it?
The Temperance Movement: I’d go with Alabama Shakes from your list as well as Led Zeppelin. I’d maybe add Jack Whites “Blunderbuss” album, Tame Impala’s “Lonerism” and also Dr John’s album, “Locked Down”.
12. Any closing remarks for our readers?
The Temperance Movement: We’re having an amazing time at the moment. Playing the music we love with the people we love. It doesn’t get better than that. Come to show and be a part of it. Join the Movement!

Before I read the interview I watched the video and was thinking this sounds like modern CCR.
