70’s Inspired Classic Rock at It’s Best
April 30 2013 – T-Mak World presents Indie On Indie where we match up two musicians of different bands and give them the task to review one of the other band’s songs. In this ongoing series we will match up bands with similar styles of music, as well as bands on opposite sides of the musical spectrum. Kick back, listen to each tune and read what the other band has to say about it. Regular readers of T-Mak World will no doubt be familiar with TimeGiant and One Bad Son. Both bands released new singles this month and we are happy to have them both back on Indie on Indie for a second time.
If you have a suggestion for a cool match up or are in a band and want to be featured email us here.

Adam Grant – Bassist of One Bad Son shares his thoughts on TimeGiant’s I Am The Fire
After catching TimeGiant for the first time this year at CMW in Toronto, I was immediately drawn in by the classic Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden harmonizing guitars and heavy grooves. Their new single “I Am the Fire” is no different. A modern take on a classic sound lifts “I Am the Fire” and makes it resonate with listeners young and old.
TimeGiant
TimeGiant wastes no time with “I Am the Fire.” The song kicks off with the band locking in on some tight musical hits, which sets off an opening chorus. The listener gets the catchy “I Am the Fire” lyric and melody from singer Tyrone Buccione within the first few seconds of the song. Buccione’s vocals and lead guitar are supported by the tight instrumentation of Charlie McKittrick (drums), Ryan Watson (rhythm guitar) and Pat Wilken (bass). Aside from a few brief pauses, the song is constantly rolling and building. It seems to peak with an effects laden guitar solo and final chaotic chorus. Perhaps the greatest strength of the song and TimeGiant as a whole, is their energy and unbridled enthusiasm.
Patrick Wilken – Bassist of TimeGiant shares his thoughts on One Bad Son’s It Ain’t Right
It Ain’t Right is the newest single from Vancouver’s hard rockin’, One Bad Son. This chorus driven, stadium rock tune is a well-rounded, sing-a-long that packs a punch. The song begins with only vocals and clean electric guitar, introducing the chorus and theme of the song in a no bullshit, straight up way. This makes the song instantly memorable and you can’t help but hum along by the time the chorus comes around later in the track and belting it out by the end. Now it’s time to turn it up. The verses come in with pounding drums and distortion paired with vocals blasting through the centre, delivering a power kick to the jugular. Shane Volk’s voice comes through raspy and powerful, like a more soulful Sebastian Bach. The instruments lay back for the verses to let the vocals shine, but start getting more interesting in the choruses, more walking bass, and some cool guitar phrasing. Later, there is a wicked guitar solo followed be the last set of choruses driving the song home.
One Bad Son
It Ain’t Right comes off the bands fourth album release. A self-titled, killer album that tells the world that One Bad Son is here. This song and the next song on the album, Scarecrows, are more on the mellow side of the album. They sit in the eye of the storm, a quick bit of beauty surrounded by a hectic, rock and roll torrential downpour. These songs are sandwiched between heavier tunes like Rustbucket, and True Grit, true heavy hitters. But where It Ain’t Right shines, is that it’s one of the most melodic and radio friendly on the album. It’s a great song that doesn’t just have attitude, it has the whole package. With tracks like this, the band sits in the good books with the rock Gods, and they probably party with the devil. Keep on killing it One Bad Son!
Verdict: I would like to thank both Granny and Pat for taking part in our Indie on Indie series. Please support independent music and show some love to bands like TimeGiant and One Bad Son that keep the spirit of the 70’s alive! I am honored to call both of these guys my friends and their respective bands are my personal 2 favorite Indie bands.
