Ozone Baby at The Rockpile – Toronto January 2013 |
Jan 21 2013 – The Rockpile was ground zero for a double bill of classic rock of the highest magnitude. The venue transported us to 1974 or so and rewarded our attendance with two mind blowing tribute bands. Tonight Ozone Baby reproduced the sounds of the best rock band of all time Led Zeppelin, and Destroyer put on the costumes and masks to give the KISS experience. Of course to see either of those bands in the 70’s you would have to share the room with 15,000 other people but you would have had incredible memories that would last a lifetime. Since we don’t possess a time machine and are not willing to let go of the sweet sounds of that bygone era, tribute bands are the way to go and these two did not disappoint. In a bizzaro world type of situation Led Zeppelin was opening up for KISS tonight and the night which only had a $10 cover was easily the best bang for the buck we have seen in a long time. We will cover the night in two parts. This article will focus on Ozone Baby and another article will focus on Destroyer which you can read here.

First up was Ozone Baby – a Toronto based Led Zeppelin tribute band. We saw this group of incredibly talented guys a few weeks ago and reviewed them here. There was no doubt in our mind how great this part of the show would be and the guys in the band did not disappoint. Steve Major wowed us with his best Page on guitars, Enzo Lapadula was all smiles on both bass and keyboards, Glenn Nash hammered the drums faithfully and then there was Phil Naro on vocals. We have covered Naro and his various projects a lot in the past year and the recap is he is the lead vocalist on three great bands, does tribute vocals to Plant, Mercury, and Hodgson and manages to be always smiling. He is a rock legend and you can see him often in Toronto (just hit up www.philnaro.com and see his upcoming gigs.

With an excellent start on the first three songs, the band delivered solid renditions. However things got very interesting right after that, because as die hard Zeppelin fans, we really enjoy the deeper cuts. The version of Trampled Under Foot the band delivered was the highlight of the night for me. Raw, passionate, perfect are some words that come to mind when trying to describe it. Instead of trying to verbalize the experience why not let you see it.

Continuing on the strength of Trampled Under Foot the band nailed Misty Mountain Hop, Since I Been Lovin You, Kashmir and a very strong Whole Lotta Love. They finished off with Rock n Roll and the Rockpile (and certainly myself) was left drooling for more.
